Insects are a class of invertebrates within the arthropod phylum that have a chitinous exoskeleton, a three-part body (head, thorax and abdomen), three pairs of jointed legs, compound eyes and one pair of antennae. They are usually small, although beetles can become rather big for insects.
There are many species of insects which feed on plants, meat or carrion. They are an important part of nature as they exterminate other species and prevent plagues. They are in charge of decomposing and eliminating organic matter and are the main pollinizers of plants, which is of major economic and ecological importance. However, they also scare many people.
